Marriott optimistic about Courtyard

Phuket and Cha-am markets still healthy

KRISSANA PARNSOONTHORN

Marriott Hotels (Thailand) expects its two new Courtyard hotels in Phuket and Cha-am will perform well even though current political unrest has affected the overall hospitality sentiment.

The hotel management chain opened Courtyard by Marriott Phuket at Surin Beach on June 6 while Courtyard by Marriott Hua Hin at Cha-am Beach will open around August.

Wallace: Arrivals growing by 10-12% Theera: Full recovery from tsunami

Theera Kanjana, general manager of Courtyard Phuket, said that opening the 256-room hotel during the low season was a good move as staff could prepare and learn about the market before the high season arrives.

''Overall, Phuket is still doing well. Since the tsunami swept the Andaman coastline in late 2004, the island has made a full-swing recovery since last year and the momentum will continue this year,'' Mr Theera said.

Courtyard Phuket, the second hotel under the four-star Courtyard brand in Thailand, projects that its average occupancy will be about 50% by the end of this year.

Courtyard Hua Hin on Cha-am Beach will target families and businesspeople.

Marriott executives declined to comment on the impact of the political uncertainties on the group's hotel business overall. ''What I can say is that the current political situation has affected the whole country. But we're still optimistic about the hotel outlook here,'' said Anchalee Chamroontaneskul, the company's marketing communications director.

Mr Theera said that the offerings at Courtyard Phuket included Kids World, a special club with full facilities and activities for children. The club is a first for the brand but will be a feature at all new Courtyard resort hotels across Asia in the future. As well, MoMo cafe will be the name of the main dining venue for Courtyard hotels as well.

Located 20 kilometres southwest of Phuket International Airport, Courtyard Phuket is offering a special rate for Thai residents at 2,500 baht per night during its opening period.

Richard Wallace, general manager of Courtyard Hua Hin on Cha-am Beach, said the 243-room hotel, due to open in August, would target families and businesspeople who want to relax while having meetings and conferences.

The 22-storey hotel has 10 function rooms, which are suitable for everything from family reunions to wedding parties.

''So far, tourist arrivals are growing by 10-12% and Hua Hin and Cha-am have done well. We hope our hotel will attract both Thai and foreign tourists to stay with us,'' Mr Wallace said.

The promotional rate will be 2,900 baht per night for weekdays and 3,400 baht per night on weekends.

Apart from the two new hotels, Marriott plans to open its fourth and fifth Courtyard hotels on Kamala and Patong beaches in Phuket in September.

Marriott started introducing its Courtyard brand with Courtyard by Marriott Bangkok in Soi Mahadlekluang 1 last November.
