TUCC trade halted

STOCKS :Trading in Thai Unique Coil Center Plc (TUCC) was briefly halted yesterday as pending sell order volume reached 30% of the company's paid-up capital, according to Somsri Nittayasakd, a vice president of the Stock Exchange of Thailand.

As of 3:30 pm yesterday, TUCC had sell orders pending for 71.278 million shares at an offer price of 4.42 baht each. The SET asked brokers about the possibility of a processing error, and was told that the trades were correct.

Trading was later allowed to resume, and the stock ended the day at 4.42 baht, down 1.88 baht or 29.84% on volume of 717,900 shares worth 3.17 million baht. Pending sell orders after the close of the market totalled 59.891 million shares.

According to SET, Yongyuth Ngamkaiwan, the TUCC chief executive, was the largest shareholder with a 52.11% stake as of May 14.

True tests WiMax

COMMUNICATIONS :True Corp and Alcatel-Lucent yesterday began trials of WiMax wireless broadband in Pathum Thani after obtaining National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) approval for six months of testing.

The company previously conducted WiMax testing with Posdata Flyvo of Korea, Huawei of China and Motorola of the United States.

Non Ingkutanon, deputy director for wireline broadband service, said True would select one of the four suppliers to install its WiMax network.

He said True planned to offer commercial WiMax service in provinces and metropolitan areas where fixed-line networks were not available.

GSB lottery contest

BANKING :The Government Savings Bank will offer 800,000 baht in prizes in a competition to help design the state bank's new series of lottery savings certificates.

First prize will be 200,000 baht for the winning design, to be judged by a panel of national artists. The theme for the competition will be to emphasise the GSB's role in society over the past 95 years and its successes in developing lottery savings certificates as a deposit product coupled with regular prize giveaways.

Entries for the competition can be made until July 16, with the judging to be held on July 24. For further details, see http://www.gsb.or.th.

School egg drive

FOOD :Egg producers are proposing a new campaign to promote eggs to schoolchildren to provide more protein in their diets.

The School Egg campaign would also help lift consumption overall and help stabilise prices for the long term, said Mongkol Pipatsattayanuwong, the new president of the Association of Hen-Egg Farmers, Traders and Exporters.

Egg production in Thailand last year totalled 10,688 million eggs and consumption was 10,459 million eggs. Per capita annual consumption is 160 eggs, compared with 330 in China, 322 in Japan and 296 in the United States, said Mr Mongkol.

He said egg prices were currently weak, with the average production cost at 2.43 baht against an average selling price of 2.26 baht per egg.
