Man arrested for beating wife, son to death, burying bodies

WASSAYOS NGAMKHAM

KRABI : Police yesterday arrested a man who beat his wife and three-year-old son to death before dumping them in a cesspit more than two years ago. Prasit Boonkong, 36, admitted to the police he used a wooden bar to bludgeon his wife as she was holding his son after they had a heated argument at their house in Krabi province on April 12, 2006.

''I beat them three to four times until they collapsed on the floor,'' he told police.

He then threw the bodies into a cesspit, covered it up with soil, and killed his pet dog to prevent it from smelling the corpses.

The skeletons of the two victims, which still had pieces of clothing on them, were dug up on Thursday.

After the examination, police identified the woman as Lamyai Paetjanla, 36, and Porntep Boonkong, 3, the wife and son of Mr Prasit.

Lamyai, a resident of Udon Thani province, had been married to Mr Prasit for more than 10 years. She often had quarrels with her husband, who had a fiery temper and was unable to control his violent outbursts, according to the police investigation.

On April 12, Mr Prasit had an argument with her after he found out that she secretly sent money to her parents in the northeastern province.

The couple made a living from working on a rubber plantation near their house.

The dispute turned violent and Mr Prasit beat his wife and son to death.

After the murders, he left his village in Krabi's Ao Luk district and was ordained as a monk at a temple in nearby Nakhon Si Thammarat for 10 days.

When he came back and his neighbours asked him about his wife, he simply told them a series of lies. ''She ran away with her lover. She took the boy with her too,'' he often told other villagers.

Lamyai's parents also asked him about their daughter's whereabouts since they had lost contact with her for so long and Mr Prasit told them similar lies.

However, they were not convinced about his story and they asked the police to help search for their daughter who had been missing for over two years.

The arrest of Mr Prasit, which was carried out after a court issued a warrant, followed a complaint made by Lamyai's parents with the Crime Suppression Division.

The police are investigating the case further as they have learnt Mr Prasit had three wives before he married Lamyai. He told police that his ex-wives also left him, but the officers did not believe his story.
