UDON THANI : Interior Minister Chalerm Yubamrung has promised to double the salaries of more than 60,000 kamnans, phuyaibans and other local leaders nationwide. The promised salary hikes, however, have drawn criticism from some observers, who dismissed it as a populist way of buying grassroots support for the government. Some local leaders are alleged to be canvassers for political parties.
Mr Chalerm made the promise during a meeting with tambon and village chiefs and other local leaders in Udon Thani yesterday. They met to discuss drug suppression and poverty eradication.
He said the current salaries of kamnans, village headmen and kamnan inspectors were too low given their responsibilities.
He added that the ministry planned to double the monthly salaries of kamnans to 10,000 baht each, of village heads to 8,000 baht each and of kamnan inspectors, deputy village chiefs as well as assistant village chiefs to 5,000 baht.
Mr Chalerm visited the province under heavy security. Authorities feared he might be confronted by protesters belonging to the anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD). However, no PAD protesters showed up.
