YALA : The newly-opened strategic station for security management in Bannang Sata district will involve local people in quelling the unrest in the deep South, said Sompian Eksomya, chief of the Bannang Sata police station. The objective of the station was in line with directives handed down by assistant police chief Pol Lt-Gen Adul Saengsingkaew.
He had stressed the need for greater public participation in returning peace to the strife-torn South.
Pol Col Sompian presided over the opening ceremony yesterday. He said the station serves as a centre of cooperation for village defence volunteers and villagers. It will also pool resources and work out safety measures for local communities.
''I told villagers that their cooperation means a lot from now on. They should take care of each other,'' Pol Col Sompian said.
The Tanohputeh strategic station was also a tribute to local leaders who died in insurgent attacks while on duty.
Meanwhile, Yala governor Thira Mintrasak gave aid worth 5,897,500 baht to 83 victims of insurgent violence in the province at the provincial hall yesterday.
Yala police yesterday announced the arrest of five suspected militants linked to a bomb attack against a teachers' escort team on June 27, in which two soldiers were seriously injured
