HELP FOR THE ELDERLY
Community healthcare centres will be opened around Bangkok to help elderly people suffering from illnesses which require regular treatment.
The centres will be run in cooperation with Siriraj Hospital's Faculty of Medicine, the National Health Security Office (NHSO) and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).
Theerawat Kultanan, dean of the Faculty of Medicine, said many older people suffered chronic illnesses, such as hypertension, diabetes and dementia, which need continual treatment and regular medication.
But few elderly people travel to hospital because of the distance, leaving them deprived of the treatment they need.
Dr Theerawat said the healthcare centres will bring the treatments closer to the community, which would motivate patients to attend regularly.
The centres, each costing about 1.7 million baht to build, will be spread throughout Bangkok.
The first centre, the Nakwachara Uthid public health service centre, will be opened in Nong Khaem district next month.
The BMA and the NHSO will be responsible for running the centres.
