NARATHIWAT: Security officers shot dead a suspected insurgent in a raid on a militant hideout in Cho Airong district yesterday.
Abduloh Mudor-asae, 23, was killed in a gunfight between six rebels and a combined force of 120 military and police officers.
The other militants, including the wounded, managed to flee, said police.
Abduloh was on the list of wanted insurgents and was believed to have been involved in many violent attacks in Cho Airong district, said police.
He was suspected of leading an ambush in Narathiwat in which a volunteer security officer and a military ranger were killed two months ago.
Five of the militants who managed to escape the raid were seen fleeing towards the border between Cho Airong and Sungai Padi districts. Sniffer dogs were deployed to track the suspects down.
The dogs led the authorities to the militants' main base in an area near Sankalakhiri mountain, about two kilometres from the raided hideout in Cho Airong district. The base mainly consists of makeshift shelters.
The insurgents abandoned the base after a brief clash. No casualties were reported.
When officers searched the place, they found evidence showing the insurgents belonged to a group affiliated to Abdulharim and Muhamad Mudor-asae, Abduloh's brothers who were both shot dead earlier by the authorities.
The slain brothers were said to be under the command of Masae Useng, who led the raid on the arms depot at the Rajanagarindra military camp in Narathiwat in 2004. The attackers killed several soldiers before making off with many weapons, marking the start of the violence in the far South.
