It's high time that food-producing countries joined hands to produce alternative fuel to counter the high price of crude oil.
As consumers suffer, oil price speculators are making huge profits. They are behind the dissemination of false information about oil supply depletion and armed conflicts in oil-producing regions of Africa.
They are also behind the attempt to boycott Iran over its nuclear-power projects, and spreading of rumours that the US oil stock is running low.
Like stock market speculators, these oil price speculators spread bad news and create fear that drives up the price of oil. Food-producing countries which rely on oil imports suffer as a result of this speculation. We cannot stay idle as these speculators go on the attack.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has asked Thailand not to grow more crops to produce alternative fuel because it might cause food shortages around the world. Why hasn't the IMF asked oil-producing countries to do the same?
Thailand should join hands with food-producing countries in the region to produce alternative fuel from crops. There is enough land to grow crops for alternative fuel without harming food production. Agricultural countries must join forces now to increase their bargaining power against oil price speculators.
