BEIJING : Teenage shooter Tanyaporn Prucksakorn wrote a new chapter in Thai sporting history yesterday. The 18-year-old star finished seventh in the women's 25m pistol _ the best-ever Olympic placing by a Thai sharpshooter.
She reached the final after shooting 582 points in the qualification for eighth place _ the last placing for a final berth.
She fired 195.7 points in the final for a total of 777.7 points and finished seventh.
The event was won by China's Chen Yang who fired 793.4 points.
Jakkrit Panichpatikum was the first-ever Thai shooter to reach the final round in the Olympics on Saturday. He was eighth in the men's 10m pistol.
Tanyaporn said she was glad to get the result although she had done better before. Although she was nervous in the qualification, she felt comfortable in the final as she had nothing to lose.
''I want to take part in the London Olympics in 2012 but I may not have a high chance to qualify for the Games as I have to continue my university studies,'' she said.
In the meantime, Natthanan Junkrajang finished second in her heat in the women's 100m freestyle in 56.56sec for 39th place among 49 competitors. It was Thailand's last event in swimming.
Although she failed to go through to the next round, her time beat Thailand's record of 57.50sec set by Jirathida Pinyosophon. She is also the first Thai woman to have timed lower than 57.0sec in the event.
