Somchai malfeasance verdict due Thursday

The National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC) is due to rule on Thursday whether or not to indict Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat on charges of malfeasance in a decade-long case, an NCCC source says.

According to the source, the case, which was launched against Mr Somchai in 2006, is linked to alleged irregularities in the auction of a land plot in Pathum Thani's Thanyaburi district by the Legal Execution Department.

Pramarn Tiyapaiboonsin, a former chief of the department, and his deputy Manit Suthaporn have already been found guilty of corruption in the case.

Mr Somchai, who was permanent secretary for justice at the time, has been under investigation for allegedly sweeping the two officials' wrongdoing under the carpet.
