THAI RATH COLUMNIST

MUD LEK (IRON FIST) Thais are so deeply polarised that many of them cannot differentiate between their political leanings and sense of duty.

Thailand is now caught in a vicious cycle of hate and lawlessness brought about by the long-running battle between the ruling People Power party (PPP) and the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD). There is deep-seated hatred between pro- and anti-government groups, making it very difficult for anyone to end their dispute.

Two people were confirmed dead and several injured when riot police clashed with PAD supporters who blocked Parliament on Oct 7. A group of doctors subsequently declared that they would not treat injured policemen in protest against their action against PAD members. A Thai Airways International pilot refused to allow three PPP members of parliament to board his aircraft.

Such actions are unethical and wrong. Doctors and airline pilots have great responsibilities. They should resign if they are not happy serving people who do not share their political philosophy. What if the police retaliate by refusing to accept complaints from doctors whose houses are burgled? People must respect the rule of law. They must be tolerant of those who have different political opinions.

The PAD is resorting to a propaganda campaign that is worse than communism. Three decades ago we fought against communist insurgents in the jungle. Now we are fighting in the capital. The country's survival is now at stake.
