SCIENCE FILM FESTIVAL

Film fest shows science can be fun

With titles like Bacterialand, Horizon: What on Earth is Wrong with Gravity? and Rumor Buster _ Microwaves, the Science Film Festival Thailand always boasts a nerdy charm for young and mature viewers alike. This year, the festival will run from Nov 18 to 28 at various venues: TK Park at CentralWorld, the National Science Centre for Education in Ekamai, the National Science Museum in Pathumthani, the Children's Discovery Museum in Chatuchak, and the Thailand Science Park in Khlong 1.

This year, the festival has picked 36 films from Germany, France, Thailand, Australia, Austria, the UK, Japan, Taiwan, China and Argentina. The programmes are divided into Family Edutainment; Ecology and Environment; Natural Science, Life Science and Technology; Culture and History.

What's geeky can also be intriguing _ and fun. The opening film on Nov 17 will be The Spell of the Poincare Conjecture. Some of the highlights in the festival include Nature Wonder Land: Spectacular Leap of an Ancient Fish _ Arowana, Amazon, which probes the fin configuration of the arowana; Quarks & Co: Are Attractive People Privileged?, which investigates, scientifically of course, if beautiful people enjoy a position of privilege in society; Changing Climate, Changing Times, which projects the world in the year 2075 where people live in a new climatic situation; The Salt of the Earth, about soil salination in Thailand's Northeast; On the Volcanoes of the World, about geologist Guy de Saint Cyr; Charisma in Politics _ The Body Language of Politicians, a topic that's always relevant.

All films are dubbed in Thai, some with English subtitles. The Science Film Festival Thailand is put together by Goethe Institute, the French Embassy, the National Science and Technology Development Agency, The Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology.
