Triple T Broadband, the wholly owned broadband internet arm of TT&T Plc, is preparing to launch a commercial WiMax pilot project for e-learning in Chiang Rai in September as part of a four-billion-baht plan.
The parent firm TT&T also plans to settle a partnership with a Korean telecom firm this month for third-generation (3G) mobile investment, with a possible 51:49 joint venture.
Prasitchai Kritsanayungyong, an executive vice-president of TT&T, said Triple T had signed a contract to purchase WiMax equipment with Cisco of United States, to be delivered next month.
''A commercial WiMax pilot project will be rolled out in 21 universities in Chiang Rai for e-learning in September, including Mae Fah Luang University,'' he said.
Mr Prasitchai said the company planned to spend up to four billion baht to roll out WiMax nationwide on top of its existing broadband infrastructure over the next two years.
Expanding network coverage would be made available in Bangkok, provinces with low broadband penetration and rural areas where copper lines were limited.
The network would be extended on a gradual basis at a cost of 300 million to 400 million baht. The company plans to use internal cash flow to finance the project.
