AUDI

Ingolstadt's MANIC saloon

The RS6 now comes with a booted end receiving the same 580hp twin-turbo V10 engine first used in the brawny Avant cargo-huller

Talking about an oil crisis... It's business as usual, mate. After launching the RS6 in estate form last year, Audi has extended it evocative RS treatment to saloon version of the A6. The decision to offer the hot executive saloon means that Audi is squaring off in the battle with the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, both of which offer the two body styles.

So the engine isn't new...

Uh-huh. The RS6 dosage remains: 580hp and 650Nm of torque from a twin-turbo 5.0-litre V10 petrol engine mated to the usual six-speed automatic with manual shift, a transmission that's becoming to look quite boring these days, especially in high-performance cars like the RS6.

Is this the same motor as in Lambos?

You mean the Gallardo? Not exactly. The Italian mid-engine supercar uses a larger 560hp normally-aspirated 5.2-litre V10 which, in fact, is also used in the Audi S6 and S8, albeit with lower outputs. The RS6's smaller V10 is also differentiated by those blowers.

So the RS6 is bloody fast...

Audi claims a 0-100kph time in 4.5sec, 0.1sec faster than the Avant model, but 0.7sec slower than the Gallardo LP560-4 which, of course, is due to the substantially lighter body of the Italian raging bull and its lighter and quicker robotised manual gearbox. But against its intended rivals (see sidebar below), the RS6 passes the test.

And what about the looks?

The RS6 gets slightly different air intakes from the facelifted A6 (see sidebar at right) and certainly other sporty details for the sake of differentiation. The 19-inch alloys house six-piston calipers for the front brakes painted in black with RS initials embedded into them. As for the garish interior, be our guest and take a look at the accompanying picture.

Will it come to Thailand?

Although the previous RS6 Avant came to Thailand at over B15m, this current generation has yet to come _ or won't be coming at all. So don't expect this super saloon coming, unless MTM Thailand, a modifier of Audis, wants to add some colour to the Thai market at the year-ending Motor Expo.

Who's next in this super saloon race?

It's got to be the pending XFR coming next year to Thailand with a new 500hp supercharged 5.0-litre V8 at around B14-15m, a notch above the B12m XF 400hp 4.2-litre V8, also supercharged. And there's also the Lexus GS-F rumoured to get the LF-A's 500hp 4.8-litre V10. But like the Cadillac CTS-V, there will only be saloon body for the XFR and GS-F.
