Keep your kissers protected from sun damage by choosing the right lippy

A pop of luscious rouge and lips are on standby for a juicy joob (kiss). Beautification, however, should come with protection because tender lips are vulnerable to environmental aggressors as much as facial skin.

"Unlike the rest of the body, which can be covered with sun-protective clothing, lips are constantly exposed to UV rays," says Dr David Orentreich, Clinique's advising dermatologist. "So just like the rest of your facial skin, it's important to protect lips from UVA, which damages deeper tissue and UVB, which can immediately cause sunburn.

"Both UV rays contribute to ageing through the breakdown of collagen, elastin, and hyarulonic acid, plentiful in youthful lips. Protecting the lips with a broad spectrum sunscreen will not only keep lips soft and attractive - it will help keep them safe."

The bottom lip is particularly susceptible to damage and skin cancer, because it faces upwards and UV rays are generally directed downwards. The dermatologist also points out that women may be unaware that applying a colourless lip product, which makes the lip look wet can actually increase the amount of UV ray that penetrates the skin.

In addition, while ladies have been worrying about premature wrinkles and crow's feet, they may have paid less attention to the first signs of ageing on lips. "Depending on lifestyle and sun exposure, one may first notice small lines appearing on the vermillion, and/or across the vermillion border. Slight thinning may be observed during the 30s and 40s," explains Dr Orentreich.

"The skin around the lips is subject to constant movement through talking, laughing, smiling and eating. Like the eye zone, it will show muscle-related lines earlier than the rest of the face. Unprotected sun exposure, as well as smoking will speed up the formation and intensity of these lines."

So, as most women use some kind of lip moisture, gloss or lipstick on a daily basis, he advises selecting a product that offers sun protection. RT
