Flash floods cause havoc in the North

POST REPORTERS

Thousands of villagers in northern and northeastern provinces are suffering the effects of flash floods that have caused extensive damage to rice paddies, roads and schools.

In Phitsanulok, more than 2,000 families in Wang Thong district built walls of sandbags on Saturday to protect riverside communities from the overflowing Wang Thong river.

Strong currents eroded a road and made it impassable in many areas. Floods have also hit parts of the commercial area in tambon Wang Thong municipality, prompting officials to pump out water to avoid further damage.

Up to 80 houses and thousands of rai of paddies in Wang Thong and Noen Maprang have been inundated. Rescue and aid workers have to use boats to reach flood-hit villagers.

Heavy flooding has also been reported in Kamphaeng Phet, Sukhothai, Loei and Mukdahan provinces.

Several thousand rai of land in Kamphaeng Phet's Muang district are under water. Monks from Asom Sukawadi Wararam were stranded in their temple after flooding stopped them making their morning alms rounds.

Villagers near mountainous areas in Loei are getting about on boats. The Loei river overflowed into riverside communities in Phu Luang, Wang Saphung and Muang Loei municipality.

Up to 2,000 rai of paddies have been damaged.

The floods in Sukhothai and Mukdahan is also causing problems.

Sukhothai governor Wanchai Suthin has declared Khiri Mat, Si Samrong, Kong Krailat, Thung Saliam and Si Satchanalai districts disaster zones.

In Mukdahan, officials are struggling to reach severely flooded areas in Dong Luang district, where transport to nearby districts is cut.

The hardest hit is Ban Na Lak school, which is under 1.5 metres of water and has closed until further notice.

New reports of flash floods have come in from Tak and Nong Bua Lam Phu province as well as Prachin Buri's Kabin Buri district, which has been under water since Saturday.
