ItalThai unit to tap clean energy sector

YUTHANA PRAIWAN

ItalThai Industrial Co, the industrial arm of the Italian-Thai Group, expects its revenue in the energy and transport sectors to grow by 50% next year to 600 million baht, according to vice-president Kriengkrai Dhiranand.

The company has planned to focus on serving renewable-energy businesses such as biogas and biomass by joining foreign equipment and service providers to provide maintenance and operation services for renewable power plants.

ItalThai now has four core businesses: energy and transport, machinery and related services, liquor and beverages, and trading businesses. Renewable energy and transport generate 20% of the group's sales, while the largest contributor is machinery and services, at 45%.

For conventional power plants, Mr Kriengkrai said Italian-Thai Development Plc (ITD), the country's largest construction company, was focusing on them.

Renewable energy has become a booming business in Thailand for the past few years due to the government's strong support. Several companies have been encouraged to invest in it.

To achieve its growth target, he said the company planned to invest in a plant to generate power from sludge by joining a local company already in the field.

Through collaboration with partners, ItalThai Industrial has joined foreign companies including Austrian-based GE Jenbacher GmbH, Danish-based Scan Airclean and Advance Energy Plus.

The company offers integrated clean development mechanism (CDM) services to help Thai companies trade carbon credits. They range from consultancy to loans through its financial-institution partners.Mr Kriengkrai said such integrated services were the group's advantage over rivals. ''We want to make sure we can serve all their [clients'] needs, from design to construction, machines installation until after-sales services. That is why we grouped strategic partners from different fields together.''

In the transport business, ItalThai recently joined Weichai Power, a Chinese bus manufacturer and importer of compressed natural gas (CNG) equipment, to operate CNG businesses in Thailand.

ITD shares closed yesterday on the SET at 2.56 baht, up 28 satang, in trade worth 461.7 million baht.
