The problem I raise today is very serious because it affects the safety and security of law-abiding citizens.
Due to the high price of oil, the budget allocated by the Royal Thai Police Office (RTPO) to each police station is not enough to cover the use of patrol cars and motorcycles.
RTPO Commissioner Pol Gen Patcharawat Wongsuwan has already instructed his deputy, Pol Lt-Gen Watcharapol Prasarnratchakit, to submit an urgent request for extra funds to the House of Representatives. This budget will cover not only police patrol units but also welfare benefits and repairs to police stations and apartments for policemen nationwide. Of all these expenses, the allocation of funds for police patrols is most urgent.
It must be noted that the crime rate has gone up nationwide due to the oil crunch and rising cost of living.
The current petrol budget allocation for each police station is based on the price of oil some five years ago. Adjustments are needed now.
Many police stations have been purchasing petrol on credit and the accumulated debt is quite high. I urge members of parliament to act swiftly to alleviate the plight of our law enforcement officers.
