Bus plan hits snag

LEASING PROPOSAL :The controversial plan to lease 6,000 NGV-fuelled bus was yesterday withdrawn from the cabinet agenda for the second time in a month.

Government spokesman Wichienchote Sukchoterat said Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej wanted a thorough review on the 110-billion-baht project. There were many documents the cabinet should study before making a decision.

The project came under the spotlight after the Democrat party and the anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy claimed there were glaring irregularities in it.

B114bn approved

HEALTHCARE :The cabinet has approved a 114-billion-baht budget for the universal healthcare scheme in the 2009 fiscal year, government spokesman Wichienchote Sukchoterat said yesterday.

Pol Lt-Gen Wichienchote said this meant the medical treatment budget per head will be increased from 2,100 baht last year to 2,317 baht.

About 48 million people are eligible for the universal healthcare scheme.

He said about 2.9 billion baht of the budget will be allocated to healthcare for HIV/Aids patients, 1.5 billion baht for those with chronic kidney disease, and about 1.3 billion baht for management of the National Health Security Office.

PLAN BACKED :The cabinet yesterday agreed in principle to the 76-billion-baht transboundary water diversion project from Laos to Udon Thani proposed by the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry.

It will bring water from the Ngum river in Laos to Lam Pao dam through a 17km tunnel under the Mekong river, government spokesman Wichienchote Sukchoterat said.
