SOMALIA
Pirates hijacked a Thai-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia with 28 crew members on board on Tuesday, the latest in a series of attacks by pirates in the region.
The ship, the MV Thor Star, is owned by Thoresen Thai Agencies Plc, Thailand's biggest shipping company. It was attacked and seized on Tuesday and all Thai crew members were safe as of Wednesday, according to a company statement released yesterday. The ship was carrying a cargo of plywood to Yemen.
"We were in negotiations with the pirates, with various support from international and local governments and professional organisations," the company said.
The owners of the MV Thor Star said the pirates contacted them on Wednesday and assured them that all their crew members were safe.
More than a third of global piracy attacks in the second quarter occurred off Somalia in the Gulf of Aden, according to the Piracy Reporting Centre of the International Maritime Bureau.
Piracy is rife off Somalia, which has been mired in anarchy since warlords overthrew a dictator in 1991.
The total number of incidents of piracy worldwide were down by 9.5% in the first half of the year to 114 cases.
