Floating a bad idea

What should not be in a traditional krathong is marijuana. Phaya Thai police arrested Anucha Chompheung and Rungratchanee Chaichet for possessing one kilogramme of marijuana and 56 methamphetamine pills at their house in the Makkasan community.

The two were caught red-handed while trying to put marijuana in a krathong to sell on the banks of the Saen Saep canal on Loy Krathong night.

Mr Anucha told police he planned to sell his drug-laced krathong for 200 baht each to youngsters in the Makkasan area.

He said he knew police would set up several checkpoints on Wednesday night, so the best way for him and his accomplice to sell their marijuana was to offer a package comprising a krathong and marijuana.

The two face jail terms of a maximum three years for drug possession.

Crackdown on temples

Social Development and Human Security Minister Udomdej Rattanasathien has been keeping a low profile, but that does not mean he has done nothing. Last Tuesday he ordered all temples to strictly adhere to the rules governing them. All temples must stop merit-making ceremonies specifically held for women who want to get rid of their sins after having abortions.

The order came after reports that some temples, including Wat Kae in Muang district in Suphan Buri province, were offering such a service.

The minister said what these temples were doing was against the principles of Buddhism. No ritual ceremonies could wipe out the sins of sinners, he added, and he also urged all agencies supervising temples to make sure that they behave properly.

Monks should tell temple-goers that making merit is a good thing for them to do, but it did not mean the sins they had committed would be forgiven.

Thieves target police

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT Even police motorcycles are not safe from thieves. Muang district police were alerted to a motorcycle theft outside a weekend market last Sunday and when they arrived they found the victim was Pol Sen Sgt-Maj Prapat Jongjit.

The policeman said he parked the motorbike which had a police licence plate outside the market before he and his co-worker went to inspect the market. When they finished, they discovered their motorcycle was missing.

Vendors near the scene said two teens rode off on the motorbike towards the Nakhon Si Thammarat-Pak Phanang road. Police are still searching for their missing bike.

Disabled man nabbed

AYUTTHAYA Police recently arrested a disabled man riding a stolen motorcycle, which even had his crutches strapped to it.

Undercover police posing as a client offered the man 5,000 baht to find them a motorcycle. The man, whose leg leg was crippled, later arrived at a petrol station - the designated delivery point - and was arrested as he tried to collect the money for the stolen bike.

Saichon Sawang-arom, 40, said he took the vehicle from the Ake market in Bang Pa-in district on Loy Krathong night.

He has a long record as a small-time thief. He said he chose to steal a motorcycle due to the high pay.
