Boonsrang tells armed forces to stay neutral

Supreme Commander Boonsrang Niempradit has warned soldiers to remain neutral despite the ongoing conflicts between different political parties.

His message was posted on the website of the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters on Tuesday and is apparently in response to Gen Pathompong Kesornsuk, chief adviser to the Supreme Command, who addressed the rally of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) in Bangkok on July 8 in uniform.

''The armed forces which are some of the main institutions of the nation must be neutral and refrain from taking sides in line with Article 74 of the constitution,'' his message read.

He said soldiers had freedom of political expression but this was subject to some restrictions to prevent the ongoing political crisis deteriorating.

''It is inappropriate to exploit military uniforms. It is not right and not fair to fellow soldiers because military uniforms are the symbols of the armed forces and belong to all soldiers,'' he said.

Gen Boonsrang said he intended to guide all soldiers in their behaviour.
