BANGKOK GOVERNORSHIP

Democrats line up 10 contenders

POST REPORTERS

The Democrat party says it has identified 10 possible choices to contest the next Bangkok governor election.

A new election will be held soon following the resignation of Apirak Kosayodhin over the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's fire trucks purchase scandal.

Mr Apirak was elected for a second time on Oct 5 but announced his resignation on Nov 12. It will come into effect on Thursday.

Democrat secretary-general Suthep Thuagsuban said the party so far has a candidate shortlist of 10 choices.

The party's selection committee, chaired by Banyat Bantadtan, will choose one of them to run for governor.

A Democrat source said deputy leader Korn Chatikavanij and MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra are considered favourites for the nomination.

Democrat party spokesman Buranat Samuttharak said if Mr Korn refused the nomination, Coca-Cola Foundation Thailand vice-chairman Pornwut Sarasin could be approached.

Prapat Chongsanguan, the People Power party (PPP) candidate in the Oct 5 poll, said he is prepared to contest the governor post again, but complained of the "half-hearted" nature of the support given to him by the party last time.

However, a party source said Mr Prapat has been in talks with PPP executives about his potential candidacy.

The source added the PPP would decide on its candidate on Wednesday.
