PUBLIC RELATIONS DEPARTMENT

Phachern replaces Pramote as head of department

ANUCHA CHAROENPO

Phachern Khampo, deputy director-general of the Public Relations Department (PRD), was yesterday appointed department chief by the cabinet to replace the embattled Pramote Ratthavinij. Mr Phachern was appointed acting PRD chief after the then PM's Office Minister Jakrapob Penkair transferred Mr Pramote to an inactive post at the PM's Office.

Mr Pramote's abrupt transfer reportedly stemmed from Mr Jakrapob's dissatisfaction over his performance, especially the conversion of TITV to Thai PBS by the Surayud government.

Mr Jakrapob is close to deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the ex-owner of iTV.

The Surayud Chulanont government took control of iTV after the station failed to pay hundreds of billions of baht in concession fee and fines to the PM's Office as demanded. The coup-installed government later renamed the station TITV before overhauling its management and renaming it the Thai Public Broadcasting Service (TPBS).

The cabinet has moved Mr Pramote to the PM's Office, appointing him as an adviser, according to deputy government spokeswoman Veerinthira Nathongborjarat.

She said the cabinet has also promoted Interior Ministry's inspector-general Sukij Charoenrattanakul to the post of Interior deputy permanent-secretary.

Mr Sukij is an elder brother of Suchai Charoenrattanakul, a former deputy prime minister in the Thaksin government and a close aide of Mr Thaksin's wife, Potjaman. Mr Sukij, a former Sukhothai governor, was transferred to the ministry by the Surayud government.
