Exporters to triple revenue

PHUSADEE ARUNMAS

Thai textile and garment exporters are committed to raising export revenue to US$20 billion baht in 2012 and shifting their focus on producing more fashion and design products.

Thailand is already the production base of upstream and downstream textile industry and what the industry should do is develop value-added textile and garment products, according to Dej Pathanasethpong, president of the Thai Garment Manufacturers' Association.

In 2012 , Mr Dej said, the world's textile and garment trade was expected to break the $1-trillion mark, $650 billion of which would be garments.

In 2006, the value was $625 billion, estimated to grow by 9% last year.

China is the market leader commanding 33% of the world's market share.

Thailand's textile and garment exports account for only 1.3% of the world's market currently.

The Thai Garment Manufacturers Association said textile and garment exports were expected to grow 15% this year from $6.97 billion in 2007.

Thailand's textile and garment industry was worth 500 billion baht last year, split almost evenly between domestic and export markets.

Rachane Potjanasuntorn, the director-general of the Export Promotion Department, said the department was ready to support the fashion industry and design products in order to promote Thailand as the Asean fashion centre.

Thailand will organise the Bangkok International Fashion Fair and Bangkok International Leather Fair 2008 (BIFF & BIL 2008) from Aug 27 to 31 at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Bitec) in Bangna.

Dhavadh Chiu, the president of the Leather Goods Association, said Thailand needed to build up its brand name if it wanted greater world recognition like Italian-made products.
