Rose Media & Entertainment Co, the country's largest importer of animation and distributor of VCDs and DVDs, will delay its listing on the stock market due to political uncertainties, according to Jirath Pavaravadhana, vice-president for business development and marketing.
''We now have to keep an eye on the situation before we decide our next move,'' he said, adding that he was still positive that the situation would get better soon.
Rose Media had previously expected to list on the Stock Exchange of Thailand this year in a bid to raise funds to support its future expansion.
However, the delay will not affect the 100-million-baht plan to develop its first joint animation projects with Japanese and American companies. The projects, now under discussion, are scheduled to start early next year.
Suffering losses from film distribution due to flourishing piracy, the company has been focusing on expanding into the promising imported cartoon segment for two years, with an aim to be recognised as a leading animation company by 2009.
''The animation market in Thailand still has plenty of room to grow. There are still many interesting cartoons that haven't been brought in,'' said Mr Jirath. ''We aim to import new copyrighted animation every month and organise cartoon events in at least 120 schools nationwide to promote awareness of our animation products.''
The company now controls more than half of the imported animation market and the contribution of animation to its revenue has risen to 60%, up from 40% before, while home-entertainment products have decreased to 30% from 80%.
Currently, it has more than 4,000 hours of animation.
About 70% are Japanese animation, 20% pre-school items mainly imported from Europe and the United States, and 10% western animation.
The company lost its rank as a top-three film distributor this year, currently at the fourth in the 4.5-billion-baht film distribution market.
In order to strengthen revenue from imported films and series, it has expanded its business into new media channels apart from home-entertainment VCDs and DVDs.
Rose Media now has one TV programme, Gang Cartoon, on Channel 5 and aims to add its Korean series, Robber of My Heart, on Channel 9 this month.
Mr Jirath said the expansion into television channels should result in a pickup in revenue of imported films and series next year.
The company is confident it could achieve 30% sales growth this year, mainly boosted by its animation business.
