Courage is what our politicians need to overcome pressing problems affecting our country. Without courage, it is very difficult for national leaders to save their country from harm.
All eyes are now on the Samak Sundaravej government, which is facing a lot of problems brought about by the high price of oil. On the streets, the government is facing daily verbal attacks from opponents who are allied with the People's Alliance for Democracy.
With no end in sight to the current political stalemate, Prime Minister Samak may eventually have to exercise his courage by dissolving the Lower House and calling a new general election.
A House dissolution need not be a bad thing. Governments around the world dissolve their parliaments and call snap elections when they face a crisis. It is a good way to end political divisions and settle problems peacefully.
For the Samak government, a House dissolution would give it new opportunity to win a fresh mandate from the public. It may campaign on issues like constitutional amendment and populist policies, and clarify lingering doubts about its connections to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Through the ballot, we may have a chance to heal the country's political wounds.
