The Election Commission (EC) has deferred its decision on the fate of the People Power party (PPP) for two weeks, so its investigators have time to photocopy a document. The commissioners were due to decide yesterday whether to recommend the dissolution of the PPP, or not. Instead the decision was postponed to Sept 2.
The inquiry panel had failed to photocopy a supporting document in its report to the meeting, election commissioner Sumet Upanisakorn said.
This elicited questions as to why it takes so long just to photocopy a document kept by the investigation department on the 14th floor for presentation to the EC's meeting on the 19th floor of the same office building in Pathumwan district.
Mr Sumet said reports from the inquiry team and EC chairman Apichart Sukhagganond, in his capacity as political party registrar, were only sent out on Friday.
Also, commissioners Prapun Naigowit and Sodsri Satayatham had just returned from the provinces and had not had the time to read all the reports before attending the meeting.
EC secretary-general Suthiphon Thaveechaiyagarn has given assurances that double standards will not be applied in handling the PPP case.
Also facing dissolution are two of the PPP's junior coalition partners, Chart Thai and Matchimathipataya. The Office of the Attorney-General has yet to decide on the EC's recommendation the cases should be sent to the Constitution Court.
If the cases are returned to the political party registrar a joint panel will decide on the next move.
