TONY WALTHAM
They are bloggers and video bloggers, podcasters, YouTube stars, Internet pundits and journalists, even a war correspondent - unlikely stars, perhaps, but they are all celebrities to the growing global online community and who make up Forbes magazine's Web Celeb 25.
If you spend a fair bit of time on the web, you may be familiar with several of the characters in this cast of high-profile, mostly American opinion-makers and gurus who have opinions that carry a lot of weight. Some in the list have web sites that have been featured here before, such as Michael Arrington (techcrunch.com) or tech podcaster Leo Laporte, although Database readers will probably be more familiar with the name Wikipedia than that of its co-founder, Jimmy Wales.
Check out http://www.forbes.com/technology/2007/01/23/internet-fame-celebrity-tech-media-cxde06webceleb0123land.html and view the slide show that introduces you to each of the 25 Web Celebs, whose average age is just over 39. This is the average for 24 of the 25, since Forbes discreetly avoids giving an age for sex-educator Violet Blue.
There are links to their sites or blogs and this should be a good introduction to some of the key influencers of the web generation, which includes author and marketing guru Seth Godin, author and digital activist Cory Doctorow and web news-breaker Matt Drudge.
So who's No. 1? It's YouTube star "Lonelygirl15", 19-year-old Jessica Lee Rose whose video clips have attracted millions.
