ASIA FOCUS : SMALL BUSINESS

Exhibition in Jakarta

As part of the move to tap the lucrative Indonesian market, 79 Thai small and medium enterprise entrepreneurs are showcasing their products at the Thailand Exhibition in Jakarta this weekend.

"Indonesia, with its population of more than 240 million, is a potential market for Thai products," said Supawadee Yamgamol, the minister counselor for commercial affairs at the Thai Embassy in Jakarta.

She said Indonesia was an important country in commercial terms to Thailand as it was Thailand's eighth biggest trading partner.

"Bilateral trade is increasing every year. In 2007, Thailand-Indonesia trade reached a total value of US$8.753 billion, up 30% from the figure in 2006," she told the Jakarta Post.

Thailand's exports to Indonesia in 2007 were $4.7 billion with the five main categories being cars, car accessories and parts, sugar, machinery and spare parts, chemical products, iron and steel.

Thailand imported $3.9 billion of products from Indonesia, mainly primary and raw materials, iron ore, scrap, chemicals, crude, machinery and spare parts.

Last year, Thailand's exports to Indonesia increased by 40% from the previous year and this year the target is for 10% growth, she said.

The Department of Export Promotion (DEP) is staging the Thailand Exhbition for the third time in Jakarta to make Thai products better known to the Indonesian public.

"For now, we will only be making trade transactions, buying and selling. Investment will be the next stage," Ms Supawadee said.

The goods to be displayed come in 18 groups, including fresh fruit, processed food, beverages, electronic goods, automotive spare parts.

Also to be shown are jewellery, footwear, household goods, construction materials and flooring, machinery and spare parts, pharmaceutical products, cosmetics, textiles, garments, decorative items, gifts, handicrafts and One Tambon, One Product (Otop) items.
