The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will allow street hawkers to do business seven days a week as part of its plan to boost the city's economy and promote tourism.

Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin said the ban on street hawking on Mondays will be lifted but vendors are required to free up space two days a month for clean-ups to take place.

The hawkers should work out with district offices and the authorities their "days off," he said.

Mr Apirak said the scheme will be reviewed after six months and the ban on Mondays reinstated if it is found to cause public inconvenience or if vendors fail to comply with the rules.

According to Mr Apirak, the relaxation of the ban, which is also hoped to cushion the economic crunch, is one of the BMA's proposed five-measure projects to boost the capital's economy and tourism.

Under the project, the BMA will promote the city's commercial areas such as Bang Lam Phu and Pratunam among tourists.

It will encourage and support state and private agencies to host agricultural fairs for farmers and consumers without middlemen. The fairs will be organised at the BMA's nine markets and another 80 privately-run markets.

He said the BMA will also launch "Made in Bangkok" hand-made products through the BMA's skills training schools.

He said the products will be put up for sale at the BMA's arts and cultural centre.

According to Mr Apirak, the BMA has designated 2009 as Visit Bangkok Year to boost the country's economy.
