Roland Ong, chief executive of IAHGames, and Mr Isra at the launch of Fifa Online 2. Developed by Electronic Arts Inc and provided by IAHGames, a provider of online entertainment software and services in Southeast Asia, the interactive football game is expected to attract up to 50,000 players. |
True Digital Entertainment Co, the online gaming arm of True Corp, expects its revenue growth to more than double this year thanks to an increasing number of broadband users.
Isra Taulananda, general manager of True Digital Entertainment, said the company expected to see 500 million baht in online gaming revenue in 2008, up from 200 million last year.
Even with a slowing economy, True Digital Entertainment is still on track to double revenue for the full year, fuelled mainly by a sharp increase in the number of broadband users and the recent introduction of the new football game "FIFA Online 2".
Mr Isra said the local online-game market was expected to maintain steady growth of 15% this year. Growing competition and the sluggish economy would curb growth for the market.
The overall online game market in Thailand was worth 2.1 billion baht last year, up 15% from a year before.
Mr Isra projects the market to leap-frog next year, fuelled by more new imported games, growing broadband subscribers and new wireless broadband WiMax technology with commercial services expected next year.
True introduced a Thai-language version of FIFA Online 2 yesterday for the first time in Thailand. Developed by Electronic Arts Inc and provided by IAHGames, a major provider of online entertainment software and services in Southeast Asia, the interactive football game is expected to attract up to 50,000 players.
True now has two million online game subscribers. Online gamers number six million. Mr Isra said the company planned to import two to three games per year.
It also plans to develop games for mobile phones over the next few years to accommodate third-generation (3G) broadband services.
