Akey accessory associated with comfort and safety of motorists these days, and more so tomorrow when it is set to become a core component, is the availability of GPS navigational system in automobiles. Many top-of-the-line models incorporate factory-issue navigation systems but the cheaper ones tend to leave them out.
You will probably need to go window shopping before buying one because there are many brands in the market, each with an array of models to choose from, and then you need to factor in the country of origin of the systems on sale.
Most important of all is that a special map programme must be downloaded; and again, there are several providers of this service. Each map comes with a different software, unique with its own details and data.
The Kamaz NAAV 430 has the following specifications:
F4.3-inch 16:9 LCD touch-screen
FOS: Windows ce.net 4.2
F64MB SD RAM
FCPU Samsung Arm 400 MHz
FGPS: SIRF 3 High sensitivity receiver
FBuilt-in antennae
FMP-3, MP-4/JPEG/WMA file via SD card
FBluetooth hand-free
FAV IN
FFM transmitter
FBuilt-in lithium-ion battery
FSoftware SPEEDNAVI SQ
The specs of the hardware appear to be in good order, so to speak, because it uses a chip set fast and extremely efficient when it comes to zeroing in on satellite frequencies.
There is an AV IN for watching videos or using the rearview camera that has an SD slot (1 GB SD card included) wall charged, car DC cable and mouse with glass suction apparatus, among other accessories provided in the package.
You don't have to waste your time and money looking for other options.
I am going to divide the following into two parts: hardware and software.
Hardware
FOperational speed: the component is capable of receiving GPS frequencies and can pinpoint location within 22 seconds. You barely have to wait when compared to conventional PDA or mobile phones which requires about one minute.
FAbility in receiving satellite signals: actual usage while the Kamaz 430 is installed on the window shield reveals that it works despite the presence of UV 100% window film. However, if you drive under an elevated motorway or expressway, the signal gets lost briefly. If you are supposed to make a turn at an intersection, then there is the possibility of error.
FTouch screen: you can set the menu in two languages, English and Thai. The voice can be set in Thai, English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages.
FBluetooth connection: can be used with hand-free mobile phone for added safety. I tried using it without the navigation system and found out it was as good as a regular mobile phone head set. But if the navigation is switched on then the delay effects can be noticed in the speaker. Communication is not reciprocated well enough. Hence if you want to use it as a hand-free, you shouldn't use the navigation because it will load the system's processor too much and compromise the capability of each application.
FSD card slot: it can accommodate MP3/MP4/JPEG/WMA which translates into music, movies and pictures. The sound quality of the music from MP3/WMA was satisfactory but still pictures from JPEG files weren't good when compared to compact digital cameras.
FAV input: Kamaz 430 is compatible with a monitor and can be connected with a rearview camera or can view from other sources.
FFM transmitter: can transmit signals in the car's audio system once you tune into the FM frequencies with the Kamaz 430. Enhanced convenience while playing MP3 from the SD card because speaker cable connection isn't required.
Software
Speednavi SQ is easy to use and it has about 500,000poi (points of interest).
FGuidance by sound: according to the programme of the Speednavi SQ, there is a choice of five languages to cater to a wide range of foreign expats and businessmen in Thailand. Menu operation is Window style, easy to use but you need to understand the chronological process of operation a bit before actually assigning commands. Memorisation of icons and symbols is recommended to enable user to familiarise with the device. All you need is believe in the component's ability to take you to your final destination.
FMap and screen display: while driving the monitor display shows the regular map graphics but as you approach intersections or a point where you need to change lanes then the map graphics will split into two portions. The left side shows a regular map but the right side shows a real-time picture of the intersection and an arrow pointing to the desired direction.
Once you enter elevated motorways with multiple roads on top of each other, the driver will be able to understand which lane to go for.
Using the SPEEDNAVI SQ enables you to access up to 500,000 points of interest or POIs; hospitals, religious sites and even government destinations or temples that don't have names can be located in the system once you drive within the desired location. The Kamaz NAAV 430 is priced at B17,900. It appears a bit pricey but you get SPEEDNAVI software with license worth several thousands of baht. You can also update software all the time.
