TV news team may take govt to court

KING-OUA LAOHONG

The editorial team of the Khao Na See (Page Four News) TV show is considering taking the government to the Constitution Court for interfering with the media. The move came after the regular late night weekday programme was taken off state-run NBT television on Monday and was replaced with a new show, Khwam Jing Wan Nee (Truth of Today) from 10pm to 11pm.

Padet Puripatiphan, one of the Khao Na See hosts, said the editorial team will consider petitioning the Constitution Court to see if the programme switch was an act of media interference.

He said the government had made an arbitrary decision to squeeze out Khao Na See, a politically neutral show.

''Mr Samak is unhappy with Khao Na See because it cannot be dictated to,'' Mr Padet said.

He said he did not see any sound reason for the government to use state media to attack its critics.

It would be futile to use the one-hour programme to fight against the PAD broadcasts, which run 24 hours a day.

This could only make people more interested in the PAD, Mr Padet said.

The Public Relations Department, which operates NBT, had allocated the 10pm-11pm slot to Newstime Television Co, which produced his programme.

Mr Padet said the contract was altered, giving the opportunity for the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship of Thailand, which will host the new show, to step in.
