More support for industry in pipeline

CHATRUDEE THEPARAT

The government intends to announce both tax and non-tax measures to stimulate the tourism industry following the completion of a study on the next two months, according to Finance Minister Surapong Suebwonglee.

The measures are being studied by the National Economic and Social Development Board, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Tourism and Sports Ministry and the Finance Ministry.

Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kohsurat said the package would possibly cover increased tax privileges for tourism investment projects.

He said the existing privileges offered by Board of Investment were not attractive enough. The BoI has offered different privileges based on zones for tourism projects such as amusement parks, cable cars and convention halls since 2000 but not a single proposal has been made.

Mr Weerasak said the BoI's current policy was aimed at attracting investments to the less-developed provinces grouped under Zone 3.

He said his ministry had proposed the privileges be offered specially for tourism zones such as the Royal Coast development plan for provinces bordering the Gulf of Thailand, and world heritage areas.

The Federation of Thai Tourism Associations has proposed that the Tourism and Sport Ministry waive value-added tax for tourists who buy inbound, outbound and domestic travel packages between October and April.

The federation said the measure would help stimulate the tourism industry this year to meet the revenue target of 600 billion baht.
