Surfers spend 21 hours a week online

Sixty-nine percent of urban Thais have access to the internet and spend an average of 21 hours a week online, according to the market research firm Synovate.

The survey of 1,286 Thais aged 15 to 64 showed that men spent around 23 hours a week online compared with 17 hours for women. Nearly 92% of young urban Thais aged from 15 to 24 have internet access.

Searching for information was the top online activity at 89%, followed by use of search engines at 74% and e-mail and instant messaging at 59%.

Over one-third of Thais actively downloaded music, videos and software, while online games were noted by 27%.

''More Thais are exposed to the internet than ever before and it has now become a social medium of everyday life,'' said Steven Britton, managing director of Synovate Thailand.

''Thais are also turning to the internet to fulfill their passion for music, with over a quarter (26%) logging on to listen to online radio stations, while the blogging phenomenon continues to spread across Bangkok. This is particularly high among young Thais between the ages of 15 to 24 with over a quarter (29%) viewing and contributing to blogs regularly.''

Mr Britton added that 22% of Thai internet users clicked on online ads, while 14% of Thais aged 25 to 39 used online banking services.

In terms of content, 57% used the web in search news and current affairs, and 48% also searched for travel and leisure information. One-third went online for education and training-related information.

Twenty-eight percent of users between 25 and 39 went online to search for career advice and employment opportunities, and 27% for financial information related to properties and investments.

Home internet access was the preferred location for 85%, while 58% said they also accessed the internet from work. Only 8% said they visited cybercafes for internet access.

Broadband internet access was the preference for 60% of Thais, with traditional dial-up listed by 17% and wireless access by only 4%.
