Steel stocks built

PROPERTY : Sansiri Plc has stocked 9,800 tonnes of steel worth 354 million baht, partly to fix its construction costs in line with its projections and to ensure that it can deliver units as promised to customers.

The steel will be used in the construction of 10 low-rise and high-rise projects including Siri at Sukhumvit, 39 by Sansiri, Prive by Sansiri, Hive Sathorn, Hive Sukhumvit 65, Hive Taksin and single houses and townhouses.

In the first half of this year, Sansiri used about 2,000 tonnes of steel, bought at 20 baht a kilogramme, which was lower than the market price of 38 baht, for projects in Hua Hin.

Shares of Sansiri (SIRI) closed yesterday on the SET at 2.52 baht, up two satang, in trade worth 7.3 million baht.

BoT board changes

ECONOMY : Finance Minister Surapong Suebwonglee said he would propose a new chairman of the Bank of Thailand to the cabinet for approval next week together with the names of five other central bank governors.

He said yesterday that the six new board members had been shortlisted from a list of 18 people, of which 12 came from the central bank and six from the finance ministry. The new appointment procedure follows requirements set out under the amended Bank of Thailand Act.

Dr Surapong declined to identify the names of the final nominees.

Funding for PTTAR

CHEMICALS : PTT Aromatics and Refining Plc (PTTAR) has reached an agreement with Siam City Bank for a 10-year loan totalling 2.5 billion baht. The funds will be used for expansion and efficiency improvement projects as well as for working capital for general corporate purposes.

Skill-building

FINANCE : The Citi Foundation and Citi Thailand have introduced a new programme with Kenan Institute Asia to help small companies build financial skills.

The Citi Executive Programme in Finance: Financial Skills Capability Building for SMEs will offer training in corporate finance and financial management to around 80 companies. The Kenan Institute will develop custom training material with an emphasis on real-world examples.

KSL affirmed at A-

FINANCE : Tris Rating has affirmed the company rating of Khon Kaen Sugar Industry Plc (KSL) and its existing debentures at A-. Tris also assigned a rating of A- to KSL's proposed issue of up to two billion baht in senior debentures due in 2013. The outlook for the ratings is stable.

Tris said the ratings reflected KSL's long track record in the sugar industry, diversification into sugar-related businesses, and a healthy balance sheet. The ratings also take into consideration exposure to regulatory and operational risks of sugar operations in Laos and Cambodia, cane supply and sugar price volatility, and regulatory risks in the domestic ethanol market.

KSL shares closed yesterday on the SET at 10.50 baht, unchanged, in trade worth 8.0 million baht.

Plate mill contract

INDUSTRY : Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has received an order from Canadoil Plate Ltd to supply equipment for a new plate mill in Thailand, with a value reported to be in the hundreds of millions of euros.

The mill will make plates required in the manufacture of high-grade pipe, pressure vessels and structural steel for the energy industry. It is scheduled to start operating in 2010.

Bangkok-based Canadoil Plate is part of the Canadoil Group, a leading components maker for heavy industry including pipelines for the oil and gas industry as well as specialty pipe components and fittings.

Best airport hotel

HOTELS : The Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel was voted the Best Airport Hotel in the TravelWeekly (Asia) Industry Awards 2008 held recently in Singapore.

The award was based on votes from TravelWeekly readers and industry peers. This year, 2.2 million votes were registered for all categories.

Opened on Sept 28, 2006, the hotel is located 10 minutes from Suvarnabhumi Airport. It has 612 rooms and six meeting and function rooms as well as two bars and four restaurants.
