Thai kids bowled over by cricket

Euro2008 news update

Thai children in Phetchabun are learning to play cricket thanks to the fund-raising efforts of Bangkok cricketers. The Southerners club held its fourth annual 20/20 challenge to raise cash for cricket nets and coaching facilities in the province.

''The game is proving very popular and the kids love it,'' said Vaughan McClear, Southerners' president and Bangkok Cricket League chairman. ''While teaching the kids how to play cricket, they are also able to enjoy the passion and participation that comes with being part of a team.''

Meanwhile, in the Guinness Cup Final at Harrow International School recently, Siam CC beat Bangkok CC in a thrilling match that was decided with only two balls remaining.

Bangkok set a target of 144-8 from their 20 overs, Nirmal leading the way with a hard-hitting unbeaten 46 that included two sixes from the last two deliveries.

Despite losing early wickets, Siam scrambled home for the loss of seven wickets with vital contributions from man of the match Mark Scully (44 not out), skipper Justin Barrett (28) and Andrew Strunk (23).
