Garages warned for NGV overcharging

The government will crack down on garage operators who exploit high demand for natural gas for vehicles (NGV) by overcharging for kit installations.

The Internal Trade Department at the Commerce Ministry had received reports of garages charging up to 70,000 baht to install an NGV conversion kit, said Vatchari Vimooktayon, the department's deputy director-general.

She said that PTT Plc reported the actual cost should average 41,000 baht for a 70-litre standard system and 61,000 baht for a 70-litre injection system.

All NGV cylinders and related kits are imported. A total of 114 garages nationwide are certified by the Land Transport Department, and 22 have passed the quality standard set by PTT.

Punnachai Footrakul, vice-president for NGV marketing of PTT, said installation costs might vary based on the quality of cylinders used by each garage.

Mr Punnachai said PTT currently had about 14,000 70-litre cylinders in stock, which were adequate for city cars.
