Intelligent storage

NetApp last week announced a FAS3100 and V3100 storage system series that provides improved performance and scalability as well as the SA200, SA300 and SA600 storage acceleration appliances and a performance acceleration module.

The FAS3140 and FAS3170 storage systems are said to help customers maximise their engineering staff productivity with a single unified architecture approach and common suite of management tools in the Data ONTAP operating system.

Features include thin provisioning, deduplication, Snapshot, RAID-DP and FlexVol while the V3140 and V3170 extend virtualisation to other vendors' legacy arrays, leveraging the same ONTAP operating system deployed in NetApp's FAS systems.

An intelligent read cache in the performance acceleration module helps optimise the performance of mainstream storage platforms running random-read intensive workloads, according to a press statement.

One or more modules fit into PCI Express slots of an existing storage controller where they function as a read cache to increase throughput and reduce latency, giving customers a cost-effective, innovative way to scale their storage systems without having to add additional disk drives to increase I/O rates, according to NetApp.
