CVD forecasting return to the black

CHADAMAS CHINMANEEVONG

CVD Entertainment Plc, the media and event-organising company, expects to turn its balance sheet to the black this year after restructing its organisation and cutting non-performing businesses.

Cathleen Maleenont, the company's executive director, said it projected to generate total revenues of 400 million baht this year by focusing more on high potential businesses. The 2008 revenue target is more than double 2007's 199.26 million baht. CVD posted a loss of 200 million baht in 2007.

''We see bright potential in the media business this year. However, if political uncertainties linger and incite violence, our event-organising business will face hard times,'' she said.

For its event business, CVD has a backlog of three to four events on hand and it is looking to organise a countdown for New Year 2009.

It also focuses on below-the-line marketing, which offers many promotion activities, especially during the festive season.

The publishing business of CVD produces three newspapers: Thunhoon, Maya Channel and Today Express, and three magazines: A Day, Hamburger and Knock Knock. It also publishes five pocket books per month.

In the next two months, it will add more content to Maya Channel and will increase its price from 15 to 20 baht because of higher operating costs.

Ms Cathleen said the publishing business would contribute around 140-150 million baht to CVD this year, or 50% of total revenue, while TV would account for 30% and event organising 20%.

However, revenues from TV would increase to 50% next year and the publishing business would decline to 35% with events 15%.

''TV revenues will increase sharply next year because we have three new TV programmes scheduled to be launched in the second half,'' she said.

''This will bring total airtime to 50 minutes per month, up from 25 minutes per month,'' she said, adding that the advertising rate would be 180,000 to 200,000 baht per minute.

Also, CVD is looking for partners to run two new satellite TV channels. The company would produce all content and the partners would take care of subscriptions, Ms Cathleen noted. The two new channels would be on air in the fourth quarter.

''We're talking with a foreign entertainment company to form a joint venture. But we can't say more at present,'' she said.

The company reported a consolidated net profit of 6.77 million baht on revenue of 86.77 million baht in the first quarter. CVD posted a loss of 83.73 million baht in the first quarter of 2007.

CVD shares closed yesterday on the Stock Exchange of Thailand at 30.50 baht, up one baht, in trade worth 7.36 million baht.
