DESTINATION THAILAND VOTE

Top 30 destinations chosen

The judges for the Bangkok Post's Thailand's Top Destination Vote campaign gathered at the newspaper's office in Klong Toey yesterday, and waded through hundreds of destinations nominated by visitors to http://www.9destinations.com, to come up with a list of 30 top sites.

Over the past two months, over 2,500 people signed up to the website and submitted their favourite sites for consideration. The online travel campaign calls on the public to help select the nine top travel destinations within the kingdom.

"The 'top destinations' in our case focus on places that leave the best impressions on visitors, whether it's beauty, the friendliness of the locals, tourist management or even value for money," said Pongpet Mekloy, editor of Horizons and one of the judges.

The other judges included Chamlong Boonsong, travel editor of Post Today; Anusorn Sriboonma, winner of the Fan Pan Thae Show (travel edition); Channarong Teerarojanarat, from ESRI (Thailand), a leader in geographic information systems; Bandhit Ketmala, TAT's chief of Tourist Information Website section; Chulapassorn Panomvan na Ayudhya from Siam Vision Club, a group of art and culture enthusiasts; Kuson Aeam-aroon, editor of NaiRobRoo Travel Guides; Kan Phakprom, a veteran trekker and webmaster of http://www.khonbaekpae.com and Thon Thamrongnawasat, avid diver and marine biologist.

The eight judges who were in attendance - Dr Thon was overseas but made his selections via the internet - were first asked to select 10 sites from the those nominated by visitors to the website.

The judges then voted from the initial list, eliminating sites until a final list of 30 was settled on. Though it was a difficult process, the judges were mostly satisfied with the end result.
