STATE RAILWAY
Yuthana Thapcharoen, deputy governor of the State Railway of Thailand, is likely to be appointed the new SRT governor in the near future. The Central Administrative Court yesterday ordered the SRT board to revive Mr Yuthana's nearly completed selection, which has been stalled for two years.
The court said the previous SRT board, chaired by Siva Saengmanee, had treated Mr Yuthana unfairly by revoking his selection and the present board must revive the process.
The governorship became vacant after former SRT governor Chitsanti Dhanasobhon retired in 2006. Mr Yuthana was selected during the tenure of the Thaksin Shinawatra government.
Salary negotiations delayed his appointment and his selection was revoked after the Thaksin government was toppled in the Sept 19, 2006 coup.
The board, then chaired by Mr Siva, reasoned that the selection in which Mr Yuthana was the favourite was not open.
The court ordered the present SRT board to nominate Mr Yuthana to the Transport Ministry within 30 days so that his name would be forwarded to the cabinet for appointment.
Transport Minister Santi Prompat said yesterday the court's order would be honoured. The vacancy had delayed the work of the SRT long enough.
