ASC to seek charges against Wattana in housing case

KING-OUA LAOHONG

The Assets Scrutiny Committee (ASC) will seek the indictment of former social development minister Watana Muangsuk and former Thai Rak Thai MP Arisman Pongruangrong for their involvement in alleged corruption in the Baan Ua-arthorn low-cost housing projects. The ASC would forward the case to the Office of the Attorney-General for indictment before the committee's term expires on Monday.

At its meeting on Wednesday, the ASC also decided to forward a case against former National Housing Authority governor Chuanpit Chaimuanwong involving alleged irregularities in the housing projects to the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC).

ASC spokesman Sak Korsaengruang said that today, the committee will take a case related to the procurement of 90 million rubber saplings to the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions.

The committee will also present the court with details of the four-billion-baht loan extension by the Export-Import Bank of Thailand to Burma for telecommunications development.

The telecom project was alleged to benefit companies connected to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

He said the ASC will send the case to the prosecution.

It accuses Mr Thaksin of abusing his authority as prime minister to aid his business cronies.

Mr Thaksin is accused of retaining shares in Shin Corp, the company he founded, through his son and siblings during his terms as prime minister and had government agencies change telecom concession fees into an excise tax in favour of a Shin subsidiary.
