Former Labour Department director-general Vichit Saengthong was arrested yesterday on a charge of collusion in arranging overseas jobs without permission and swindling workers seeking employment abroad.
It was the second arrest for Mr Vichit, who is also a former Si Sak Ket MP and PM's Office minister. He was apprehended by Bang Sue district police in January on the same charges. Crime Suppression Division (CSD) police arrested him in a parking lot at the Criminal Court on Ratchadapisek road yesterday.
They were acting on five arrest warrants issued by courts in Uthai Thani and Ubon Ratchathani.
The 76-year-old retired official, who was on bail, is accused of working with associates to defraud more than 200 workers who were required to pay 17,000 baht each in return for working in Malaysia.
Mr Vichit denied the charges, claiming that subordinates used his name for dishonest purposes without his knowledge during his time in the Labour Department.
He will be sent to Uthai Thani for further questioning.
