Red cards for almost 800

By Wassayos Ngamkham

Almost 800 people have been arrested on football gambling charges and betting slips worth more than 500 million baht have been seized during the Euro 2008 football tournament, which ends tonight. Pol Maj-Gen Ruangsak Jarit-ake, the deputy police spokesman, said police nationwide have cracked down on football gambling and arrested 778 people _ 637 gamblers, 97 bookmakers and 44 others employed to run betting slips between the bookmakers and gamblers.

Police also confiscated 455,941 baht in cash and seized betting slips showing that more than 506 million baht had been wagered on the matches during the tournament, which kicked off on June 7.

The officer expected that after the tournament, debt collectors would be out chasing the losses incurred through gambling, which could lead to a rise in crime.

A close watch is being kept on these debt-collecting gangs and measures will be in place to prevent crime as desperate punters try to recover their losses.

Police will be on patrol near schools to protect students, many of whom are known to gamble on football.

An emergency hotline centre will also be set up to help people deal with debt problems
