Court issues injunction in temple row

The embattled Foreign Affairs Ministry may seek to appeal against an injunction granted by the Administrative Court against its support for Cambodia's proposal to list Preah Vihear temple as a World Heritage site.

Test run of new rail route

A new rail route linking the northeastern province of Nong Khai and Laos will be given a trial run on July 4 and 5. Provincial governor Jadet Musikawong and other officials met a delegation from Laos led by Wongdara Khamhung, the deputy director-general of the immigration department of Laos, to discuss preparations for the test run of the 35km rail route between Nong Khai station and Tha Na Laeng station in Hat Sai Fong in Laos on July 4-5.

Red cards for almost 800

Almost 800 people have been arrested on football gambling charges and betting slips worth more than 500 million baht have been seized during the Euro 2008 football tournament, which ends tonight. Pol Maj-Gen Ruangsak Jarit-ake, the deputy police spokesman, said police nationwide have cracked down on football gambling and arrested 778 people _ 637 gamblers, 97 bookmakers and 44 others employed to run betting slips between the bookmakers and gamblers.

'Golden age' for Phuket property

Real estate development is booming in Phuket as foreign investors are acquiring vast areas of land for housing projects. A number of foreign developers are to set up companies with Thai business partners to build housing estates and residential projects on the resort island, which has entered what officials call the ''golden age of real estate development.''

GPO to look into 'detrimental' board policies

The reinstated Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) board will review policies of the board appointed by the public health minister, which it has replaced. The Administrative Court is considering a petition filed by Vichai Chokewiwat against an order removing him and several other individuals from the GPO board.

Opposition criticises govt's 'ghost budget'

The Democrat party yesterday criticised the 2009 budget for its lack of clear details, saying that makes it difficult to keep irregularities in check. Limited train services resume

Trains were packed as they resumed services to the deep South although with reduced frequency yesterday. Services to the province resumed after they were halted for six days following a rebel attack on June 21.

Hepatitis B virus making major inroads

Lack of awareness of early screening is putting Thais at greater risk of infection from the hepatitis B virus which could lead to liver cancer, say medical experts. An estimated three million Thais are thought to be carrying the virus today. However only 15% are undergoing proper treatment, Teerha Piratvisuth, deputy director of the Prince of Songkla Hospital's Gastrointestinal and Liver Institute, said.
