Baan Muasng editorial:

One of the good ideas introduced by the previous Thaksin government was the proposed creation of a Suvarnabhumi metropolis to administer the area around the new airport.

Under the plan, the prime minister or a deputy PM would chair an administrative committee responsible for managing the area.

The chairman would choose 20 committee members from local administrations and experts. Four representatives from local administration bodies would be in charge of policy-making. Local administration organisations would still keep their current roles and authority.

The second stage of this plan would see the election of a mayor and city council for the Suvarnabhumi metropolis. The prime minister would also appoint a Council of Advisers to help the mayor and councillors.

A draft Suvarnabhumi Metropolis Act calls for the creation of a new city comprising parts of Lat Krabang and Praves districts of Bangkok and parts of Bang Phli and Bang Saothong districts of Samut Prakan.

The city would cover 521,789 sq km and be capable of handling 45 million air passengers and six million tons of cargo a year.

New job creation projects would directly benefit local people living in the new metropolis so they would not have to seek jobs elsewhere.

This is a good idea that should be implemented by the current government.
