A family enterprise
The Central Group of Companies has a history that dates back to 1947, when its founder Tiang Chirathivat, started a general merchandise store engaged in the importation and distribution of quality goods from around the world. As the store prospered, the business evolved and expanded, preparing the foundations needed by Samrit Chirathivat, Tiang’s eldest son, to establish the first Central Department Store in 1957. The store marked a new chapter in Central’s history, and introduced a new trend in the country’s retailing business. In 1983, Central opened its first Central Hotel in Bangkok, marking the Groups' first diversification outside the retailing business.

one of Thailand’s biggest
The Central Group of Companies is now a vast business conglomerate operating on five core business activities: retail, marketing, real estate, hotels and fast food. With a strong capability to meet the ever-changing needs of customers and consumers, the group responds actively to the competitive business environment. Its excellent business infrastructure, strong management, unique brand, steady growth, financial strength and business focus are among Central’s advantages over competitors. With total group turnover of 50 bn Baht in 2002 and with approximately 30,000 employees, it is considered as one of Thailand’s five largest business groups.

The Central Group is composed of several main business divisions:
• Retail – Central Retail Corporation Limited
