Spreading success
Thai Rayon was established in 1974 by the late Mr. A.V. Birla
of the India-based Aditya Birla Group. His dream of spreading
his success beyond India was made possible through Thai Rayon,
the first overseas venture of the group, located in Thailand.
Thai Rayon helped blaze a trail of successful ventures in Thailand
– most of them co-promoted by Thai Rayon – and even overseas.
Today, the Aditya Birla Group is India’s top industrial conglomerate,
spanning nine countries.
Tonnes of quality
Thai Rayon has a current output of 80,000 metric tonnes of
Viscose Rayon Staple Fibre (VRSF) per year and about 60,000
metric tonnes of Anyhdrous Sodium Sulphate –
a by-product.
Located in Angthong, Thai Rayon employs about 800 employees
and is Thailand’s sole manufacturer of VRSF. Almost 40,000
tonnes of the product are consumed domestically, while the
balance is exported to the U.S.A., Mexico, Canada, Indonesia,
the Philippines, China, Pakistan, South Korea, Australia,
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Exports account for two billion
baht yearly.
Diversification and integration
While expanding the capacity of Thai Rayon, the management
also established additional businesses throughout the years,
including:
• Thai Carbon Black Public Company Limited – first producer
of carbon black in Thailand (1978)
• Thai Polyphosphate & Chemicals Co., Ltd. – first producer
of sodium tri-polyphosphate in Thailand (1980)
• Thai Acrylic Fibre Co., Ltd. – first producer of acrylic
fibre in Thailand (1987)
• Thai Epoxy & Allied Products Co., Ltd. – first producer
of epoxy resins in Thailand (1987)
• Thai Organic Chemicals Co., Ltd. – producer of epichlorohydrin
and caustic soda (1998)
The company also has significant investment in a yarn spinning
mill in Indonesia, a wood pulp plant in Canada and an acrylic
fibre plant in Egypt.
Varied applications
Birla Viscose, produced from wood pulp and completely biodegradable,
is used in the manufacture of shirts, trousers, knitwear,
towels and bed linen. Absorbing twice as much moisture as
cotton, it is also used in diapers, sanitary napkins and tissues,
etc. Birla Viscose is also luxuriously soft and is used extensively
in high-end fashion garments. It is a versatile fibre and
can be used in its pure form as well as blended with other
fibres. It is also available in chlorine-free and anti-bacterial
versions.
All-round excellence
Thai Rayon is committed to achieving total customer satisfaction
via its own stringent quality policy and its ISO 9002-accredited
quality management system. The TPM certification is a testimony
to its superlative plant maintenance systems. The company’s
policy also requires that highest standards of safety and
environmental control are met,
as reflected in its ISO 14001 accreditation.
The company fulfils its role as a responsible corporate citizen
through regular contributions and programmes for the development
of the surrounding community.
Into the future
Thai Rayon has gone from strength to strength. Earning a reputation
for meeting the highest quality standards in the industry
worldwide, Thai Rayon remains competitive and keeps its business
sustainable by working to provide ever better value for money.
In future, more speciality applications will be focused,
and more premium markets in developed countries targeted.
